How to Know Your Postal/Zip Code in Nigeria

If you’re interested in knowing how to properly find and use postal codes in Nigeria, this guide will take you through it in easy to understand terms.

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has a chronological arrangement of the postal codes of various cities and regions in the country.

Unlike some countries where postal/zip codes usually carry some alphabets, the codes in Nigeria are represented using only 6 digits, irrespective of the region.

The NIPOST divides the country into 9 regions, and those regions determine the first digit of the 6 digit code; while the last 3 digits at the end of the code is determined by your local post office.

What is a postal/zip code?

A postal code is series of codes that may contain numerals, alphabets and/or punctuations, used for sorting out mailing address.

Postal code in many English-speaking countries is also referred to as ZIP code, PIN code, postcode, etc., depending on the country. They all represent the same thing and serve the same purpose irrespective of the name it is called.

How to know your postal code

Many Nigerians make mistakes when filling in their postal codes for the sake of physical or online transactions. This can lead to a delay in the delivery of your parcel.

Like I noted earlier, Nigerian Postal codes are not limited to just Geopolitical locations or states. Every local government, town and sometimes, areas have their respective postal/zip codes.

So whenever it is required of you to enter your postal/zip code in any online/offline form, make sure you don’t use your state but the exact location instead.
