Understanding Nigeria Postal & Zip Codes

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) divides the country into nine dispatch zones. Each postal code consists of 6 numeric digits:

  • First digit: Represents the Dispatch Zone (e.g. 1 for Lagos/Ogun, 9 for Abuja/Nasarawa/Niger).
  • Second & third digits: Combined with the first digit, represents the dispatch district for outgoing sorting.
  • Last three digits: Represents the specific delivery location (a post office, street, urban area, or rural delivery facility).

Tip: "Zip Code" is an American terminology; in Nigeria and internationally, it is officially known as a Postal Code or Postcode. When international websites request a Nigerian ZIP code, use the 6-digit postal code of your state/area.
